As of March 2023 with the launch of our new ANPR engine below is no longer required. All Gatekeepers delivered after that date are automatically outfitted with the new engine.

A Gatekeeper-X comes with a default Cortex with three ANPRAxons to spread the processing over different cores.

Important! All three ANPRAxons still need to be configured. There are no country modules added yet.

Jump to configuration right away or keep reading to know more about the AVUTEC engine.

The ANPR engine is built up with Modules.

Generic ANPR

The generic ANPR module, or XX-module, is looking for characters in the image and reads them as they are. It does not take country syntax, plate type or fonts into account.

Country specific modules

A country specific module is trained on country-specific syntaxis, alphabets, fonts and plate types. This makes it outperform the generic ANPR engine in accuracy by multiple percentages. Different country modules can be stacked, in order of priority and statistical occurrence.

Tailormade module

There are two kinds of tailormade modules.

A tailormade ANPR can be trained to meet project requirements.  An example is the recognition of boat "license plates" in a city in the Netherlands.

Or custom syntax is added to the XX module. The capture of a vanity plates could be an example of the latter.

Jump to add custom syntax.

Stacking ANPR modules

GKX_Add_country_modules_2

In a typical AVUTEC installation, recognition modules are combined and stacked in the order of project priority. They start with the country-of-installation module and end with the XX-module. When a license plate is captured, it will be processed in that order. When the first module cannot recognize the plate, it’s journey will continue to the following one. The XX-module at the end of the pipeline will read the license plate, that does not fit in any previous syntax, font or plate type.

Add ANPR modules in CortexClient

GKX_Add_country_modules

1.Open the Settingspanel of the first ANPRAxon

2.Click add country, a pop up window with all the available country modules will appear.

3.Select a country by clicking it

4.Select multiple countries by holding CTRL while selecting the countries.

5.Drag the countries to obtain the desired order.

6.By clicking the arrow (green bounding box) a country module jumps all the way to the top.

7.By clicking the recycle bin icon (green bounding box), the country module will be removed from the list.

Repeat above steps for all three of the ANPRAxons.

Add custom syntax to XX module

GKX_Add_country_modules 3

Without configuration the XX-Module reads the characters of a license plates without syntax checks. It reads the characters as they come, without any context checks.

The XX-Module offers the possibility to check license plates with a custom syntax. This can come in handy for recognition of vanity plates or other custom syntax. When a custom syntax is added, the XX-Module will only recognise license plates with this syntax.

Configure the XX-Module

1.Go to the settingspanel of the ANPRAxon

2.Click "add country"

3.Choose XX-module from the pop up window

4.Click "customize syntax"

5.Click add Regex (green bounding box)

Sample regex

In the yellow bounding box a snippet with a sample Regex is added:

^-*(\w-*){4,10}

From now one the XX-module will only recognize license plates that have between 4 and 10 characters not counting the dash. If a license plate has 3 characters it will be rejected.
